Scientific research has shown arts, more especially music, can help solve a lot of societal issues that currently exist in South Africa. Lephalale is one of places in our province that has very little to no recreational activities, and that cannot be good for any society. Apart from music helping the youth fill up their time, Music has the following proven scientific effects on People in the society:
Memory: Studies linking music to memory recall have increased since the research first emerged in the early 20th century. Music has been proven to help cure Alzheimer patients because it evokes emotion and emotion can bring with it memory.
Brain Illnesses: Music also helps people with Seizure, Brain Injury and/or Stroke respond and recover much better than people who don’t listen to music.
Brain Health: Music improves brain health and function in many ways. It makes you smarter, happier and more productive at any age. Listening is good, learning and playing is better. Brain scans show that professional musicians’ brains are different than those of non-musicians; they are bigger, better connected, more sensitive brains. Musicians have superior working memory, auditory skills and cognitive flexibility. Science has also shown playing music can improve your mood and reduces chronic stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol. It also boosts brain chemicals helping stimulate the formation neurotransmitter dopamine, which are the brains’ “motivation molecule” and an integral part of the pleasure-reward system (it’s the same brain chemical responsible for the feel-good states obtained from eating chocolate, orgasm, and runner’s high).
